The National Basketball League-United States (NBL-US) is thrilled to announce that Charles Dobbs, a key player from the 2024 NBL-US Champion HBCU Movement, has signed a professional contract to play for Club Susanj in Montenegro. Dobbs, who was instrumental in helping the Movement win their historic championship, will now take his talents to Europe, joining his former HBCU Movement teammate Kalil Potts, who also signed with Club Susanj earlier this week.

Dobbs, a 6’8″ forward, made a name for himself during the 2024 NBL-US season with his impressive stats and dominant play. He averaged 16.6 points per game, 14.8 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game, earning him a spot on the NBL-US All-First Team, as voted by Eurobasket.com. His combination of versatility, defense, and rebounding made him one of the most valuable players in the league, and a vital piece in the HBCU Movement’s undefeated championship season.

Charles Dobbs’ Career Path

Before joining the NBL-US, Dobbs played college basketball at Prairie View A&M University, where he was a standout forward. His performance in college led to opportunities in professional basketball, including a stint in the British Basketball League (BBL). Dobbs’ success in the NBL-US further solidified his reputation as a dominant force on the court, and now, he looks forward to continuing his career on the international stage in Montenegro.

Kevin Williams Sr., President of Basketball Operations for the NBL-US, expressed his excitement and pride in seeing Dobbs take this next step in his career:

“Charles Dobbs was great to work with this season as he helped us win a championship in the NBL-US. His versatility, defense, and rebounding were key to our success. As a fellow HBCU alum, it’s always great to see HBCU alumni like Charles continue their careers on the international stage. This is a fantastic opportunity for him, and I’m excited to watch both Charles and Kalil Potts represent the HBCU Movement and the NBL-US in Montenegro. I look forward to seeing them compete for another championship together.”

Williams, a passionate advocate for showcasing the talents of athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), was instrumental in recruiting Dobbs to the NBL-US. His commitment to providing opportunities for HBCU athletes is evident, and Dobbs’ success reflects the value of those efforts.

A Shared Journey to Montenegro

The 2024 NBL-US season marked a historic achievement for the HBCU Movement, as they became the first professional basketball team comprised entirely of athletes from HBCUs to win an NBL-US championship. Now, two of the team’s star players, Dobbs and Kalil Potts, will continue their journey together as teammates at Club Susanj in Montenegro. Both players played pivotal roles in the Movement’s success and will now bring their championship experience to European basketball.

Dobbs’ strong rebounding and defensive presence, combined with Potts’ leadership and scoring, will make them a formidable duo in Montenegro. Their shared experience with the HBCU Movement will undoubtedly help them build on their chemistry and work towards success with their new team.

The NBL-US Platform

Dobbs’ signing is another example of how the NBL-US serves as a platform for talented players to elevate their careers. With a focus on providing opportunities for athletes from diverse backgrounds, including HBCUs, the NBL-US continues to pave the way for players to pursue professional basketball at the highest levels, both in the United States and abroad.

Looking Ahead

The NBL-US Winter Season is set to begin on December 7th, 2024, and will continue to be a platform for emerging talent in professional basketball. The league is excited to see the continued growth of its players and is committed to supporting athletes in achieving their dreams of international success.
