The National Basketball League–United States (NBL-US) proudly announces the addition of its second all-HBCU program, HBCU Culture, set to debut in the 2026 season. The new team will join the league’s inaugural HBCU franchise, the 2024 NBL-US Champion HBCU Movement, marking a historic expansion of HBCU representation at the professional level.
About HBCUs
HBCU stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
HBCUs were founded to provide higher education opportunities for African American students at a time when access to traditional institutions was limited or denied. Today, HBCUs continue to serve as pillars of cultural heritage, academic excellence, and athletic achievement.
Mission & Vision of HBCU Culture
Mission:
To create a professional basketball platform that expands opportunities for unsigned athletes, current HBCU students, and HBCU alumni, positioning them to compete, develop, and advance into higher levels of the game—both domestically and internationally.
Vision:
To strengthen the pipeline between HBCU athletic communities and professional basketball by:
- Providing exposure to overlooked and unsigned talent
- Giving current HBCU players a path to professional experience
- Elevating HBCU alumni seeking to continue or revive their basketball careers
- Demonstrating that HBCU athletes can excel in elite-level leagues
- Building a recognizable brand that uplifts HBCU legacy, culture, and pride
Statement from Kevin Williams Sr., President of Basketball Operations
“The demand and excitement generated by the HBCU Movement was undeniable. After witnessing their incredible undefeated run and championship victory in their first season, it became clear that HBCU athletes belong on this level.
With so much interest, talent, and support surrounding the Movement, the NBL-US had both the responsibility and the opportunity to add a second team. HBCU Culture will allow even more HBCU athletes to compete, develop, and showcase their abilities.
This addition also creates an instant rivalry—one rooted in excellence, pride, and friendly competition. We believe the Culture and the Movement will push each other, elevate the league, and continue proving that HBCU athletes can compete anywhere.”
Statement from Commissioner Lillian Countee
“This is a major moment for the NBL-US, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome HBCU Culture into the league. Expanding HBCU representation is not only good for basketball—it’s good for the communities, alumni, and institutions that have shaped generations of greatness.
My expectations for the Culture are high. Their mission aligns perfectly with our league’s commitment to development, opportunity, and innovation. I anticipate they will bring a unique identity, high energy, and competitive spirit to the 2026 season.
The NBL-US is proud to champion programs that reflect the true diversity and talent across America, and the addition of HBCU Culture strengthens that mission in a powerful way.”
